Zuid Afrikaans Hospital in Pretoria that made it on the top 20 list for the 5th consecutive year

Mediclinic, private hospital group Busamed and independent private hospitals have come up tops in Discovery Health latest survey to choose South Africa’s 20 best hospitals as voted by patients.

This is the 5th time Discovery published the list based on the experiences of its members in 202 of the country’s private hospitals. The survey completed by 53 000 of its members covers several aspects of care including nurses’ and doctors’ communication with patients, pain management, the suitability of the hospital’s environment to patients’ needs and how clearly information is shared with patients.

Mediclinic was the top-achiever with eight hospitals in the top 20, followed by the country’s first black-owned private healthcare group, the Busamed Hospital Group with five hospitals.

Five hospitals, Zuid Afrikaans Hospital in Pretoria, Busamed’s Hillcrest and Lowveld Hospitals, Mediclinic Panorama in Cape Town and Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre in Durban made it on the list for the 5th consecutive year.  New hospitals on the list include Busamed Modderfontein in Sandton, Mediclinic Plettenberg Bay, Mediclinic Strand, Mediclinic Worcester and Midlands Medical Centre in Pietermaritzburg.

According to Dr Roshini Moodley Naidoo, Head of Quality of Care at Discovery Health, overall Patient Survey Scores (PaSS) have improved by 19% since the inception of the survey in 2014.

“This clearly shows that the hospitals surveyed are increasingly meeting patients’ expectations of better care. Running the survey and publishing the results annually, has the same positive impact in our healthcare environment as observed internationally,” says Dr Moodley Naidoo.

“The voice of the patient is powerful and can be used to make a difference in how care is delivered. PaSS creates a systematic and standardised way to capture information about a patient’s experience of care in hospital. These results are then shared with members on Discovery’s website, creating transparency and driving positive change by helping healthcare providers identify gaps that need attention,”

The 2018 results show an improvement in five out of the eight survey categories, with the remaining three categories showing very minimal drops.

The categories that patients care about most are: how nurses communicate and engage with patients, information about medicine and managing pain. Encouragingly, all of these categories delivered higher scores in 2018, and it is hoped these will improve even further in future years, says Dr Moodley Naidoo.

“We believe the survey has a positive impact beyond in-hospital care, as patients who are well-prepared for discharge from hospital have better health outcomes and are at lower risk of repeat admissions. This is an important area of focus as repeat admissions are, on a global level, considered a warning sign of a care gap,” said Dr Moodley Naidoo.
