Portfolio Committee chair Dr Dhlomo

The Portfolio
Committee on Health has been visiting the OR Tambo Port Health Centre this
morning to assess the preparedness of Port Health to detect any cases of the
novel Coronavirus.

 “Following
a briefing from the Minister of Health, the committee felt it was necessary to
visit OR Tambo to see first-hand screening procedures put in place by the
Department of Health at our ports of entry,” said Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, the
Chairperson of the committee, said yesterday evening when announcing the visit.

First
reports emanating from the airport (Eye Witness News) this morning have
revealed that representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO) were also
there to assess the facilities.

It has since
been noted that Dr Dhlomo has reportedly said that,  “as MPs”,  they were impressed with the measures the
Airports Company of SA (ACSA) have to deal with detection, isolation and
response to the Coronavirus at all ports of entry.

*Point
made by Dr Dhlomo in his visit announcement was that due to the fact that the
Port Health Facility is in a restricted area, media would not be allowed to
accompany the committee.
Further reports will therefore be posted when they become available.
