Life Healthcare has announced the appointment of Peter Wharton-Hood as its new group CEO and executive director of the company with effect from 1 September. Wharton-Hood is the former chief operating officer for Deutsche Bank’s corporate and investment banking division in London.
He will be taking over from Pieter van der Westhuizen, who has been serving as acting CEO after the resignation of Shrey Viranna who emigrated to Australia in the beginning of the year.
According to a statement by Life Healthcare, Wharton-Hood is a seasoned and proven business leader with strong global experience in strategy and operational delivery in complex and evolving environments. He also gained “deep” experience in running retail businesses, operations and information technology while in executive positions with Standard Bank.
During his time with Deutsche Bank in London, he was head of operations for the global markets’ division and subsequently global COO for the corporate and investment banking division, which included responsibility for technology and operations. He also managed the complex Brexit transition process for Deutsche Bank.
According to Life Healthcare’s exiting chairperson, Mustaq Brey, Wharton-Hood has a solid track record of successfully driving transformation programmes, both in South Africa and internationally, and has a genuine passion for diversity and inclusion.
“Peter also has strong experience in dealing with regulators across the globe. We have no doubt that his leadership will prove invaluable to the continued success and sustainability of Life Healthcare,” Brey said.
The hospital group has also appointed the managing director of Bigen Africa Health, Victor Litlhakanyane, as its chairperson designate.
