Dr Zweli Mkhize

State
President Cyril Ramaphosa has just announced that Dr Zweli Mkhize, former Minister of Cooperative Governance and
Traditional Affairs, succeeds Dr Aaron Motsoaledi as South Africa’s Minister of
Health.

Dr Joe Phaahla retains his position as deputy minister while
Dr Motsoaledi becomes Minister of Home Affairs.

Dr Mkhize
(63), a medical graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (1982), was MEC for
Health in KwaZulu-Natal from 1994 to 2004 and served as premier of the province
from 2009 to 2013.

Chancellor
of the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2009, Dr Mkhize rose to prominence in
the early 1990s as a member of the ANC’s National Health Secretariat – the
structure that was tasked with the responsibility of developing the country’s health
policy.

He
co-founded the Regional Health Forum and became a member of the National Health
Forum while running his own private medical practice in Pietermaritzburg during
the same period.
