The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has welcomed the appointment of Dr Zweli Mkhize as the new Minister of Health. Dr Mkhize takes over from Dr Aaron Motsoaledi who has been appointed as the new Minister of Home Affairs.

The HPCSA says Dr Mkhize comes with a wealth of experience in the health sector. He served as MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal from 1994 to 2004. He was co-founder of the Regional Health Forum and became a member of the National Health Forum, which is one of the structures that served as a consultative avenue for stakeholders in the health sector across the country. He was also a member of the ANC’s National Health Secretariat, a structure that was tasked with the responsibility of developing the country’s health policy.

The HPCSA says it is confident that Dr Mkhize will deliver efficiently in this position and lead new and refreshing perspectives on advancing the health system of South Africa.
